In the economic order, we find, essentially, no rules of human conduct. Anomie. "Liberty" in the economic sphere depends on social regulation.

This passage does not introduce the important question and Durkheim's answers. The question is why, when a modern economic order succeeds a more primitive one that was based on non-rational principles and was highly local, among homogeneous groups, doesn't chaos break out?
